INTRODUCTION:
Farther Along (1) is a marvelous old song that captures the theme of this sermon
Verse 1.
Tempted and tried we're oft made to wonder
Why it should be thus all the day long,
While there are others living about us,
Never molested though in the wrong.
REFRAIN
Farther along we'll know all about it,
Farther a long we'll understand why;
Cheer up, my brother live in the sunshine,
We'll understand it all by and by.
I remember a story told by the Rev. Mark Hatfield, a former colleague of mine
Two Aardvarks, Art and Albert met at a very small anthill.
Art takes a look at the anthill and says,
"If we are both going to this hill neither of us is going to have a decent meal because there is only enough for one of us.
So why don't we fight it out and the winner gets them all."
Albert agrees and in one tenth of a second Art grabs Albert by the snout and slams him into the ground, swings him around and flips him fifty feet into the air.
On the sidelines other Aardvarks are watching and one says to the other.
"What kind of an Aardvark is Art?
The other one says,
"Well before he got that nose job, he was an alligator."

6I will be standing there in front of you on the rock at Horeb. Strike the
rock, and water will come out of it, so that the people may drink." Moses did so, in
the sight of the elders of Israel. 7He called the place Massah and Meribah,
because the Israelites quarreled and tested the LORD, saying, "Is the LORD among us
or not?"

13No one, when tempted, should say, "I am being tempted by God"; for
God cannot be tempted by evil and he himself tempts no one. 14But one is
tempted by one's own desire, being lured and enticed by it; 15then, when that
desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin, and that sin, when it is fully grown, gives
birth to death. 16Do not be deceived, my beloved.17Every generous
act of giving, with every perfect gift, is from above, coming down from the Father of
lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.

7Do not be deceived; God is not mocked, for you reap whatever you sow. 8If
you sow to your own flesh, you will reap corruption from the flesh; but if you sow to the
Spirit, you will reap eternal life from the Spirit. 9So let us not grow weary
in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest time, if we do not give up.

1At that very time there were some present who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. 2He asked them, '"Do you think that because these Galileans suffered in this way they were worse sinners than all other Galileans? 3'No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish as they did. 4'Or those eighteen who were killed when the tower of Siloam fell on them--do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others living in Jerusalem? 5'No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish just as they did."(Top) (Back to sermons for 2001) (Back to sermons Home Page) (Back to Shultz Home Page)
God is faithful, and he will not let you be tested beyond your strength, but with the testing he will also provide the way out so that you may be able to endure it.
CONCLUSION:
The next time you run into Art or Tom or Jane or Gladys remember the story of the Aardvarks.
13"But the one who endures to the end will be saved."

ADDITIONAL SCRIPTURE READINGS RELATING TO TESTING AND ENDURANCE.
3
And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5and hope does not disappoint us, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.7
Do not be deceived; God is not mocked, for you reap whatever you sow. 8If you sow to your own flesh, you will reap corruption from the flesh; but if you sow to the Spirit, you will reap eternal life from the Spirit. 9So let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest time, if we do not give up.10
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power. 11Put on the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12For our struggle is not against enemies of blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13Therefore take up the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to withstand on that evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm.12
Not that I have already obtained this or have already reached the goal; but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. 13Beloved, I do not consider that I have made it my own; but this one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14I press on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus.5
For this very reason, you must make every effort to support your faith with goodness, and goodness with knowledge, 6and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with endurance, and endurance with godliness, 7and godliness with mutual affection, and mutual affection with love. 8For if these things are yours and are increasing among you, they keep you from being ineffective and unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9For anyone who lacks these things is nearsighted and blind, and is forgetful of the cleansing of past sins. 10Therefore, brothers and sisters, be all the more eager to confirm your call and election, for if you do this, you will never stumble.
